The video and slides for lecture 14, the guest lecture by Frank van Ham on network visualization, are now online.

As announced in class, we will record attendance for all guest lectures from now on.

The video for lecture 13 is now online.

Tomorrow we have Frank Van Ham from IBM research as a guest speaker. He’s going to talk about network visualization.

Frank is very well known in the visualization community and this will be an interesting lecture. Please come to class tomorrow and engage him in questions and discussions.

Slides for today’s lecture on maps, including the discussion of midterm solutions at the beginning of class, are now posted on the lectures page.

We will post good student solutions for HW 1 and the midterm soon.

The video for lecture 11 is now online.

Please note a scheduling change on the lectures page: Frank van Ham will give his guest lecture next Wednesday, not this week as originally planned.

We will talk about Maps tomorrow and also discuss some solutions to the midterm exam at the beginning of the class. Please be on time!

Lecture 9 Slides and Video

The video from today’s guest lecture by Jock Mackinlay is now online, along with his slides and his demo Tableau workbook.

Guest lecture Wed, March 4: Jock Mackinlay


Jock Mackinlay, a world-famous visualization researcher who has been mentioned in class quite often, will give a guest lecture on Wednesday. He will talk about Tableau, the interactive visualization software that you will be using in HW 3.

Even though Jock will speak remotely from Seattle (thanks to the magic of the web and the telephone) I highly encourage you to come to class and to ask questions and engage him in a discussion. I am out of the office next week, but Miriah will keep an eye on attendance.

For online students - as usual - please ask your questions on skype.

HW 2 is due next Wednesday, February 25 at 5 pm EST. You only have ONE week to complete this assignment.

Lecture 6 slides on color are now online on the lectures page. Please read chapters 5 & 6 in Ware by Monday.

I put a nice summary of color design rules on the downloads page (ColorRules.pdf). Please print it out and keep it handy.

There will be a section this Friday, 2/13, 1-2:30 pm with Moritz Baecher. Moritz will give a brief introduction to Processing and then talk about the Processing assignment in HW 1.
